As long as there has been civilization there have been outcasts. And this is especially true of college civilizations (well apart from the fact that they’re hardly civil). From the mighty Highness’ of College Beauty Queens and the Mighty Lords of the Last Benches to Their Excellency the OC/OG/Committee Heads and Royalist NSS Aficionados, there has always been a distinct divide between acceptable social groups and the rest. For if you’re not in them you’re unacceptable. But can anyone honestly say that they will be happy as an air-head-bimbo or a fierce College Nationalist?
Such questions only bitter experience can answer but amidst these ridiculous extremes (yes, indeed they’re all very ridiculous) there emerges many a fringe groups that fret away with their own doings with their own kinds. They scamper along corridors in small packs so as to avoid their natural predators – the ‘popular’ lot. They leave behind an unnatural stench of fear and superiority. Talking in Ancient Geek at times and esoteric slang at others; it’s not entirely clear how they will ever survive in the real world. They form the natural ecosystem of the college environment…like sea anemones…don’t know what those are? My point exactly!
Firstly, we peek into the odd smelling trails of Neo-Witches and Wizards (better known as Wiccans). They’re notably littered with splotches and smatterings of spells and samples from the biology lab (Eye of newt? Anyone?) Dressed in buttoned down attire, they adorn themselves with voodoo accessories (bargain buys at Causeway, just so you know) and talk of Pagan tattoos they have which enhances they’re power. Of course, the tattoos can never be seen; they are in far to ‘private’ a place (like they’re imagination I figure). They speak of attaining distant powers that Lovecraft couldn’t have fathomed. They make the gibberish in Hell-Boy almost sane.
Their not so distant cousins are similarly found only half a bench and several IQ points away under a dark and brooding shadow of…wait for it…GOTH! They not only exemplify the perfect mix of depression and ignorance they also give a whole new bend to the philosophy of nihilism…don’t know what that is? Don’t worry, neither do they really. The brand of nothingness weighs heavily on them…lucky for us that’s about as much as they are of a threat.
The other fringe groups to watch out for are quite a revolting combination of all the above. Depressed, angry and with an interest in concoctions that would put homemade bomb-makers to shame – yes, the anarchists. Fortunately for we know that most of this bunch never attend class and are most likely in jail cells or dead. Only in an extreme cases do they even come to college and when they do you are assured a fireworks display. Another reason to not attend I say.
So as you transverse the halls of the college henceforth, remember that such creatures exist all around you; either in disguise or plotting at home. At the end of the day, it’s not likely that the fringes of a civilization be civilized, now is it?
