College Budget Dating

So you finally made it. The drudgery, frustration and boredom of college has finally paid off…you have a date! But here begins a whole new line of annoyances…where to go? What to do? And most importantly, who will pay? Especially when you’re strung out on daddy’s purse-strings and he just refuses to play his part as the ATM. Well, don’t worry because CJ has the answer for all you “cheap dates” who can’t afford to be “cheap on a date”. Here is an easy guide on how to unravel her G-String without loosening your purse strings!

Well it’s not easy envisioning a nice romantic date with the girl of your dreams (Ref: Any chick who says ‘Yes’) on a college student’s budget but don’t despair. It’s important to understand the ground rules as far as college dating is concerned. First and foremost, who pays? The progressive modern school of thought (Ref: “I got no money” School of thought.) in dating etiquette says that guys and gals are equals, so they go Dutch on all dates…BULL CRAP!! No such thing fellas, you know what they say about “no-free-lunches”, right? The same rule applies in dating.

A recent survey on Gender and Dating Expectations showed that (1) Most dudes expect to pay for the date and (2) Most chicks expect ALL guys to pay for the date; the only exception being when the chick asks the guy out (so that’s basically, NEVER!). Clearly there is a significant double standard as far as dating goes but considering what’s at stake here, who can really be surprised?
The trick of bearing the moolah burden along with the task of maintaining the suave cool guy image is not an easy one. If college canteens don’t bankrupt you then the expectations on any date surely will. The sleight of hand illusion requires that you don’t give yourself away as a cheap-o but more of a rustic non-materialistic rebel who can make even the simplest things in life seem magical and fun…this is no easy task but it can be done.

The Art of War says that, “the environment is a warrior’s greatest ally”…or something like that…the point being that the wonder of Mumbai is a money saving monster for cheap-o daters. For most students in the South Bombay ring the urban beauty of Marine Drive can always guarantee you the next date you’re fishing for. Stroll down from NCPA towards Wilson College while sharing intimate personal history and a five rupee cone of nuts. Look forlornly, like a old black and white hero, regretfully commenting on the horrendous architectural monstrosities (conveniently including the priciest bars and restaurants) that have defaced the sea face from what it once was, all the while subtly indicating that maybe it would be “oh so romantic” if you both just sit facing the sea holding each other’s hand (keep your focus on getting the next date).

Eventually you could even end up at one of the (so-called) beaches that are littered (literally) down South and gently splash about in the shallow waves (watch the eyes!!). If you’re lucky you might just be the first guy to start a “wet t-shirt” contest in Bombay! Munch on delicate (on the pocket) snacks like bhel-puri and chat, telling her all the while how, “Down to earth!” she is and looks so much better juxtaposed to the natural environment as compared to the stuffy indoors of an artificial mall!
Another great way of having a super awesome cheap-o date is by simply paying attention to the bulletins in the Art and Culture Section of your news paper. The number of free (and seemingly intellectual) activities is never at a loss when you’re in Bombay. Take her out to Jehangir Art Gallery and display how much of an art buff you are, admire the canvases with adjectives that are meant only for her. Talk about your love of art and culture, display with great reservation how the artist has missed this stroke or over done the highlighting there. All of this at an unknown painters expense! Could things get any cheaper?

And for those of you with a Vodafone connection, don’t forget that on Tuesdays you are king and maha-rajah for there is a 50% discount on movie tickets at all major theaters under the Vodafone Tuesdays scheme, so why not splurge once in the week and live on the image of a generous benefactor for a few more days. Other than that don’t miss out on the student’s discount at Prithvi Theater when all tickets must go at 50 bucks a pop (just bring your ID card at time of purchase). What more could you ask for?

Of course, other than the cash factor the rest is totally up to you. Taking the obstacle of the purse strings out of the way is done, so there is a clear stretch of running space for you all the way to the Holy Grail; if only you don’t stumble, stutter and stall! There is no way even I can make a screwed up personality appealing (or can I???). Stay connected to this section for more miracles!
